Seating and Mobility FAQ

Please reach us at info@mobilitymattersfoundation.org if you have more questions about our foundation.

With rising healthcare costs and limited access to necessary services, we strive to bridge the gap between accessibility and mobility within the home and community. We are working to create a space for those who have limited access to therapy services and those who need assistance with mobility or accessibility related obstacles such as: wheelchair evaluations, transportation and financial barriers, and coordination of services.

In order to increase accessibility to seating and mobility services, Mobility Matters Foundation provides complex occupational therapy evaluations for equipment such as wheelchairs, lifts, standers, hospital beds, adaptive strollers, ADA-accessible bathroom remodels, and more! We provide these services at a pro bono and telehealth level in order to increase accessibility. After the evaluation, our team writes the letter of medical necessity (LMN) and collaborate with ATP supply companies to help individuals obtain their necessary equipment. As we are not the suppliers, MMF's role is solely to provide the evaluations and write the LMNs. We are not responsible for the process of obtaining equipment after that.

We are passionate about equal accessibility and mobility for ALL individuals. Our founder, Dr. Amy Siegler, created a needs assessment for the Western NC region and found gaps in healthcare access due to barriers such as lack of transportation and financial resources, geographic barriers, and services not being reimbursed by insurance companies.

Due to these barriers, many of these individuals are not receiving necessary services related to accessibility and mobility. By executing our mission, we can make a difference in the overall quality of life for individuals of all abilities.

We currently serve the community in a pro-bono capacity. Due to an increased need for services in our community, we are seeking funds from donors and grants to assist with covering the cost of services and medical equipment. In 2023, 76 individuals were provided pro bono services. We also assisted our partners in obtaining 14 adaptive bikes for children with disabilities.

We rely on help from the community and grants to aid in funding our mission. If you would like to support us in our efforts, please donate to us via Venmo, PayPal, or physical check.

Mobility Matters Foundation strives to provide services to rural communities and underserved populations in North Carolina. Our mission focuses on providing pro bono evaluations for patients who have NC Medicaid as their primary insurance.

We are aware that there are individuals who continue to face constraints when accessing a traditional seating clinic (due to a lack of transportation, no telehealth benefits, geographic barriers, insurance constraints, or living in another state). We are mindful that such cases still require a skilled therapist to perform a seating and mobility evaluation. For these situations, Mobility Matters Foundation offers our services for a collected fee of $100 at the time of your appointment to cover therapist and operational fees. Prior to scheduling, the Mobility Matters Foundation board must grant approval for the evaluation to ensure compliance with OT state licensure guidelines. The fee may be paid by any community member or the patient. Circumstantial financial assistance may be available.

Bike day started as a fun way to connect with the community and educate the public on the importance of adaptive recreational equipment. It is an opportunity for everyone to come and try out a Freedom Concepts Adaptive Bike! There are trained professionals on hand to conduct evaluations and determine product sizing for children and youth ages 2 and up.  Mobility Matters Foundation's role in this event is to coordinate the event day, partner with ATP suppliers, provide a free skilled Occupational Therapy evaluation for the adaptive bike, write a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), and then potentially write a grant on a child's behalf in order to cover a portion of the whole cost of the bicycle.

Disclaimer: The Mobility Matters Foundation is not liable for covering the cost of the adaptive bicycle. We promise to do what we can in terms of providing the evaluation and grant writing in order to aid with the cost coverage, however are not responsible for how much funding is granted for the bikes.
